We spent this weekend in Tilghman Island, 'the Pearl of the Chesapeake Bay'. A two hour drive from DC, across the 4-mile long Bay Bridge, Tilghman (pronounced Tillman) is a small island located halfway down the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, joined to the mainland by a drawbridge. Home to less than a thousand people, Tilghman is allegedly so unaffected by the passing of time that the dialect of the Tilghman Islanders is supposed to be close to that used by the original settlers. In addition to undertaking an intensive study of the linguistic characteristics of the locals, we spent the weekend enjoying the glorious sunshine, relaxing, reading and eating several tonnes of Maryland crab cakes - the region's culinary speciality. It really was picture postcard perfect.
