It is hard to believe it was a year ago today that we were standing in front of the Capitol Building on a freezing January day, watching Obama being sworn in as the 44th President of the US. There was such a spirit of optimism at the potential of what the new administration could achieve, pride at electing America's first black president and hope that Obama really would bring change to Washington. By contrast, today's news from Massachussetts that the Senate seat long-held by Ted Kennedy has been won by Republican Scott Brown is pretty sobering for anyone wishing to see a health care reform bill come to pass. The Democrats' loss of the filibuster-proof 60 seat Senate majority lessens the likelihood of much of Obama's promised agenda being enacted and, combined with the divisive and cynically combative nature of the political status quo and the relentless focus on the mid-terms (which are still 10 months away), makes for rather depressing reading, so I've decided to concentrate instead on another, far more inspiring, One Year On story.
Nadya Suleman, Octomom and Angelina-lookalike extraordinaire, graces the front cover of this week's 'Star' magazine, displaying her 'new bikini body' - a year since she gave birth to her eight babies. It is admittedly quite a remarkable transformation and apparently all achieved without surgery. Her secret? Sit-ups, a healthy diet and weight training in the wee hours (she says she tries to get two hours' sleep a night, which makes me feel much better about my own nocturnal schedule). Hhmm. But if she can get from this:
then surely there is some hope for me and my own baby belly. Although I'm still not totally sure that Suleman's tremendous transformation is change I can believe in...
No surgery? No way. The idea that exercise would get rid of stretch marks like that, inside of a year, is ridiculous.
