Sometimes I miss being in the office. Life is just not the same without the endless meetings, monthly reports, line-by-line budget analysis, sales forecasts and reforecasts. I realised today that it has been over SIX MONTHS since I worked on a Powerpoint presentation and I haven't been anywhere near a multi-layered spreadsheet since September. No wonder I feel so good.
Nevertheless, the time has come to give an update on progress in the baby-rearing department. Alex turned three months old today. The young man is doing pretty well, but it's never too early to start a bit of formal assessment. So here we go...
ALEX SHERCLIFF QUARTERLY REPORT
Growing: Grade A. After my error last month when I thought Alex weighed 18 pounds and he was actually only 16 pounds, I'm not going to try to estimate his gross tonnage on this occasion. But he's definitely getting heavier and can no longer fit into many of his clothes so I think that means he is growing.
Sleeping: Grade A+. Outstanding. The time has come to reveal that Alex has been sleeping 7pm-7.30am since he was 8 weeks old. This information was previously classified, as l was worried I wouldn't have anyone left to have coffee with if I broadcast this fact to those of my friends with young children. Please don't disown me. Blame Gina. He also has a nice little morning nap, a sleep at lunchtime and an afternoon snooze. I want to be him.
Eating: Grade B. Alex has 4 feeds a day and does pretty well with all of them. He's rather good at burping now too, if he remembers to take his hand out of his mouth. However, there is significant room for improvement in the taking-a-bottle-from-Daddy department.
Hand-eye coordination: Grade B. Good progress being made in this area. Alex can pick up muslin cloths, grab the toys which dangle down on his activity mat, wave a Peter Rabbit rattle and bring his hands together in a formal pose. He would have scored higher but for the fact that he smacked himself in the face yesterday when trying to stick his fists in his mouth.
Rolling over: Grade F. Not even close. He props himself up nicely on his elbows but there ain't no commando rolls happening just yet.
Communication skills: Grade E. Alex is very communicative and gurgles endlessly but I can't understand a word he is saying. He smiles nicely with his eyes though. And I boosted him up a grade for his delicious giggle.
Reading: Grade B. Excellent progress. Alex has read almost everything on his bookshelf and sits patiently whilst his mother explains to him yet again the noises the animals make. He is becoming quite adept at turning the pages of his books, albeit with his chubby fists rather than his fingertips.
Posing for photos: Grade C-. Thank goodness for digital cameras. See below.
Overall Grade: B
Which is not bad for his first report. We'll do another one soon.

Cancel that coffee we might have had.

What about the eskimo roll? Did Simon try to teach him the eskimo roll? He tried with a few of us. We got an F too... I'm not saying it's the teacher's fault, though.
