For those of you who have been hounding me for an update on Simon's involvement with the Washington Romance Writers, here we go:
The keen-eyed amongst you will note that the meeting has already taken place. Simon spoke last week to a group of lovely ladies: WRW attendees include both fledgling and published authors who are keen to hear from speakers who might give them ideas for characters or settings for their novels. Past guests at the monthly meetings include best-selling novelist Nora Roberts, military intelligence personnel and 'a one-man FBI intelligence analyst, bomb analyst and fiction aficionado', so Shercliff had a lot to live up to. Unfortunately, being a loyal diplomatic spouse and the soul of discretion, I cannot possibly reveal the details of the Embassy escapades and evacuations, secret assignations and international incident that Simon unveiled. (Actually, it's not really because I'm the soul of discretion; Alex and I only arrived in time for lunch and totally missed the talk).
However, all is not lost. The two-hour session was recorded and the tapes or mp3 discs are available to WRW members who were not able to attend the meeting in person. An annual membership fee of $45 seems a small price to pay to hear Shercliff's tall tales. Alternatively, you could have a word with Julian Assange and ask him to hack into the system and post the audio files to Wikileaks. I dare say Simon's talk would be far more diverting than the leaked State department cables.
